Missouri S&T Pest Control for Academic Facilities

The following is the general position of the Physical Facilities Department, Custodial and Landscape Services regarding insect control and the potential use of chemical treatments within campus buildings.

Missouri S&T’s comprehensive environmental management system (EMS) and its ISO 14001 certification require that the campus exercise environmentally sound practices. These practices include the implementation of an effective integrated pest management program (IPM). The primary focus of this IPM program for our campus is in regards to human health, social, environmental and aesthetic concerns. The objectives of an IPM program include the following: 

1. Identifying pest
2. Monitoring pest populations
3. Determining action threshold
4. Selecting appropriate management strategies

Due to the diverse population on campus and varying levels of sensitivity to chemical treatment, it is the practice of the Physical Facilities department, Custodial and Landscape Services to first trap insects for identification and monitor activity levels within campus buildings. If determined that insect activity is beyond acceptable levels, then chemical treatment options may be considered.

If chemical treatment is determined as the best course of action for insect control, Physical Facilities management will notify department heads (or appropriate contacts) within the building with treatment details and the service provider appointment date/time prior to the treatment. Department heads (or appropriate contacts) should notify affected building occupants prior to the treatment appointment. Department heads (or appropriate contacts) will be provided with the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for the chemical used in the treatment process.
